Friendship Party
Our friendship party will take place on Wednesday, February 14th from 1:00-2:00. Please note that this day is also a 1 hour early dismissal, so students will leave shortly after the party. Students are welcome to bring a card for each student in the class. Below is a list of names to help your child address the cards for the upcoming Valentine’s/Friendship Party. If you plan to send cards or valentines, please make sure you address a card to every child in our room. Please send all addressed cards to school by Wednesday, February 14th, which is the date of the party. You are welcome to send treats along with the cards. All treats will need to be store bought and individually wrapped. Bags will be decorated during the party to collect the cards, so no boxes will need to be made at home. If you are interested in volunteering for the party, please fill out the bottom portion of the Valentine Class List and return it to school. If you are interested in donating towards the materials needed for the party, please click on the link below. Thank you all for your ongoing support!

PBIS
Kreft is implementing PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) again this year. This program fosters appropriate behavior through positive incentives. Students have opportunities all day long to earn Titan Tickets, which are handed out when students display respect, responsibility, and safety. As a class, we have a communal bucket where we put all of our tickets. When we get to 100 tickets, we will earn a class reward. At that time, I will also draw 5 individual tickets to earn individual prizes.
In addition to the positive rewards system, PBIS also fosters teaching procedures the exact same way throughout the school. Kreft's PBIS team developed common language for all of the procedures we teach. They also created videos to show to students at the beginning of the year. That way, all students have access to learning the exact same procedures. Here are the PBIS procedural videos for Kreft. Feel free to review these with your child before school starts and throughout the year. These procedures will help foster respectful, responsible, and safe behavior.
Sanitizing procedures will be addressed as soon as school begins.

Specials
On the blog and within the V.I.P. calendars, I will include a schedule for the various specials such as PE, Library, Art, and Music. Please be sure that your child has proper shoes for PE (tennis shoes, no sandals or flip flops) and remember to return library books on assigned library days (these will be posted on the snack/special calendars each month).
Birthday Celebrations
The school handbook states that birthday party invitations may NOT be handed out at school unless the whole class is invited. Please stick to these rules to eliminate hurt feelings. Thanks for understanding! In addition, your child may bring treats on his/her birthday, but these treats will need to be store bought.
Sending Money/Notes to School
Remember that all money needs to be put into an envelope with your child’s name, the purpose of the money, and the teacher’s name on it. This can be placed in the take home folder’s “Return to School” pocket. Any other notes or forms you wish to return to me can also be placed in the “return to school” pocket in the blue folder.
Take Home Folders
Please help your child learn the life skills of organization and responsibility by checking the blue take home folder daily for a variety of different forms, such as study trip information, home projects, finished work, etc. If you need to send or return anything to school, it should be put in the “return to school” pocket in the take home folder. Any “keep at home” papers from me are to be kept at home. Students will be responsible to give me those things. Please make sure your child has his/her folder every day even if there is nothing in it. Thanks for your support!
PTA Meetings
There are going to be PTA Meetings scheduled once a month throughout the year. We invite anyone who is interested to join. Parental involvement is highly valued within the Lewis Central School District. The upcoming date for the first PTA meeting of the academic school year is on Monday, Sept. 11th at 6:00 at the Titan Hill cafeteria. If you have any questions, contact the office at Kreft or Titan Hill.
SeeSaw
At Kreft, we use SeeSaw regularly to communicate with families. This site also allows us to share videos and student work with you throughout the school year. I look forward to sharing this work with you!
V.I.P. Days and Snack
V.I.P. stands for Very Important Person. Every child will have an assigned day most months to be the V.I.P. On his/her assigned day, your child will be allowed to bring a show and tell item (this items must fit in his/her backpack) as well as a book to share with the class (see Book Show and Tell below). In the past, this person has also been assigned to bring a snack for the whole class. Due to COVID, snack will need to be brought individually by each student every day. I always encourage healthy snacks. I am sending home a healthy snack list to give you some ideas for what you might send each day. If it's easier for you to send snacks for an entire week, that is fine. Just put them in a bag, and your child can keep these in his/her locker throughout the week. I do have a small refrigerator in my classroom if a snack needs to be refrigerated.
On your child's birthday, he/she is invited to bring a birthday treat for the whole class as long as it is pre-packaged, store bought, and individually sealed. These days will be posted on the calendar, so you can plan ahead. We have 22 students in our class, but just to be safe, I would send 23 snacks. These do not need to be healthy, but they sure can be!
Check the newsletter or the V.I.P./Specials calendar to see when your child is assigned to bring show and tell or provide a birthday treat. On, or near, your child’s birthday, your child will be assigned to be the V.I.P. You are welcome to provide the birthday treat for the class at that time. As always, feel free to ask me questions.
Snack Bag
If students are allowed to bring snack for the whole class at some point this year, I will send a snack bag home with your child the day before he/she is assigned to bring snack. The bag will be used to carry the snack to school. It will also serve as a reminder to bring snack for the whole class the following day. Even if you choose not to use the bag, please return it to school.
Book Show and Tell
Your child will have a book “Show and Tell” on his/her V.I.P. day. This should be a book he/she would like to recommend to others. It would be awesome, although not required, if your child could read 1-2 pages of the book as the year progresses and reading skills improve. This will definitely be easier later in the year, as students become better readers. Have no fear…we will practice what a book share looks and sounds like. Another option would be sharing a book your child has written. Just simply send the book in the snack bag along with the snack. Thanks!
Testing 1st Several Weeks
As we are going to be testing your child in various skill areas over the first few weeks, we ask that the first few weeks of school your child gets plenty of sleep. We would like each student to be well-rested for the best possible results. The testing will focus on literacy skills (such as reading sight words and blending sounds together), science, and math skills. This testing is nothing to be concerned about as it is something that is done every year to help us depict areas of strength and weakness.
Classroom Wish List
In years past, parents have asked if there are things needed for our classroom that they could donate. If you are interested in purchasing something for our room, the wish list is written below:
Lunch
We eat lunch at 11:00 every day. Unfortunately, due to COVID, guests are not allowed into the school to have lunch. In years past, parents have always been welcome to eat with their child. If this is allowed this year, I want you to be aware of your child's lunch time. You will have to sign in at the office and wait for us down there as we will come to the cafeteria to eat. You are welcome to bring food for your child from a restaurant outside of school. Again, those are only the procedures if guests are welcome into the building. Thanks!
Writers' Workshop
Each day, students do some type of written work during Writing Workshop, most often in the form of a book. There has been a lot of research that supports students writing books as early as preschool. Through the study of various genres and types of books, students will have the opportunity to write many books of their own throughout the year. These books will stay at school until they are finished. You will have an opportunity to look at your child’s first book at conferences. Rest assured, your child will be writing each day, even though papers might not be coming home!
Rules and Routines
During the first two weeks of school, we will be learning a lot about rules and routines. So that the children are not overwhelmed with a long set of classroom rules, we have three that we focus on: be respectful, be responsible, and be safe. I encourage you to talk with your child about our rules and possibly even enforce them at home. They are short and simple, yet they cover everything from teasing, put-downs, whining, etc. The more consistency from school to home, the better!
As you establish back -to- school rules and routines at your house, I encourage you to:
1. Put your child to bed early every night (8:00).
2. Feed your child a good breakfast each morning.
3. Read a bedtime story (or two) every night…it will pay off in the long run!
Water Bottles
In the past, I have provided a water bottle for your child to keep at school. These have been disposable Gatorade bottles that got replaced every few weeks. Due to COVID, we are not allowed to keep water bottles at school overnight. Instead, students are invited to bring a water bottle from home every day. This will come home every night so it can be cleaned. I would love to have some disposable water bottles for students who forget a bottle. Please let me know if you would be willing to provide some to the classroom in case this happens. I would love for each student to have access to a water bottle throughout the day. Also, please only send water in the water bottle (nothing else). Thank you so much!
Drop-Off and Pick-Up
In the past, you have been able to come into the building for pick-up and drop-off. Due to COVID, these procedures have changed. At this time, only students and staff members are invited into the building. Pick-up and drop-off will be done outside. You are required to remain in your cars. There will be adults to help students to and from the cars. Thank you for your patience and safety.

Zipping and Tying
Zipping coats and tying shoes are two skills you can help your child with at home. Even though I don't mind helping my students out with these tasks, I am trying to foster independence. Your child should be able to accomplish these tasks independently by the end of kindergarten. If your child is not independent with these skills, please begin to practice them at home.

Volunteers
At this time, I believe volunteers are welcome in our classroom. Please let me know if you would like to come into our room to volunteer or if you are interested in completing some odd jobs at home like cutting and sorting. Teachers always have plenty to of work to get done! Just jot me a note or email if you are interested and we can set something up! Thank you!

Box Tops
Please follow these steps to earn money for our school!
Step 1: Download the Box Tops App
Step 2: Pick Kreft (if this isn't an option, pick Titan Hill)
Step 3: Scan your receipt and any Box Top items will be added to the school total.
Please note: we are no longer collecting Hy-Vee receipts as that program no longer exists.
Optional Homework
I will send begin sending homework home the week of Labor Day. Red homework folders will come home every Monday (that week will be Tuesday because of Labor Day) and the folders will come back to school every Friday. One side of the folder will contain reading homework, and the other side of the folder will contain math homework. This year, I want to make it very clear that homework is completely optional. I value family time and free time, and I understand completely if that take precedence. Even if you don't complete the homework, please send the folder back each week, as I will always send new homework home. You may choose to do homework one week and not another. I also understand if you choose to do the homework over the weekend. Feel free to send the folders back by Monday if you choose to do it that way. Let me know if you have any questions.
Guided Reading Book Bags
Guided Reading will soon be under way! For those of you who are not familiar with this program, it is basically an organized reading group set to meet your child’s reading needs. I meet with groups every day to work on various reading skills: fluency, comprehension, phonics, decoding skills, etc. Every other day I meet with a group, your child will get a new book to read. He/she will bring that book home in his/her “Book Bag”. Your child will read the book to you, and then you will record the title and date on the reading log. Once the reading log is completely filled up, your child will get to go to the prize box. Please bring the book and the bag back to school within 1-2 days so he/she can bring home another book. Thanks for your continued support!
P.E. Shoes/Library Books
Please be sure that your child has proper shoes for PE (tennis shoes, no sandals or flip flops) and that your child returns library books on the designated days. On the V.I.P. calendar, I have included the days we have P.E. and the days that library books are due. Thanks for your support!
